BioCurious is , a 2,500-square-foot community lab in a low-slung office building in Sunnyvale, that opened in November as a place where scientists, entrepreneurs and others can meet to conduct biology experiments and innovate on everything from bacteria to thermal cyclers. The facility also offers classes on topics ranging from DNA sequencing to microfluidics. The organization was started via Kickstarter crowd financing.
The lab is part of a growing do-it-yourself biology movement. BioCurious and other such labs to the 1970s electronics hackers in their garages.Many do-it-yourselfers see the biotech field as being at the same point that the personal-computer industry was more than 30 years ago, when Steve Jobs
and Steve Wozniak debuted what became the Macintosh computer at the Homebrew Computer Club and founded Apple Inc.Currently BioCurious offers:
- a complete working laboratory and technical library
- for entrepreneurs to cheaply access
- equipment, materials, and co-working space
- a training center for biotechniques, with an emphasis on safety
- a meeting place for citizen scientists, hobbyists,
- activists, and students
